diabEET

An estimated five percent of the population has diabetes. Moreover, the number of people with diabetes is increasing rapidly, due in part to our sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits. As a person with diabetes, you should aim to keep your blood sugar levels as stable as possible, and that can be achieved by eating a healthy and varied diet.

That someone with diabetes can still enjoy delicious food is proven by the author of this diabetes cookbook. Diabeet is a book full of tasty recipes — from a simple soup to a deliciously topped sandwich, a festive meal, or a delightful dessert. All recipes are suitable for both people with and without diabetes. Every dish has been checked and double-checked by two dietitians who also calculated the nutritional values.

The common thread throughout the dishes is balance. A balance between vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, carbohydrates… And above all, a balance between healthy eating and enjoyment.

Thomas Van de Water is a photographer, photography teacher, food blogger, and above all a bon vivant, foodie, and gourmet. What many people don't know, however, is that Thomas also has diabetes. And what many also don't realize: one doesn’t have to exclude the other.

Elke Van Oevelen is an illustrator and graphic designer who has the unique ability to visually express that balance, making dietary proportions for people with diabetes immediately clear and understandable at a glance. Elke wanted to make nutritional balance feel clear, calm, and accessible. The dietitians ensured the nutritional values were spot on; Elke translated that into visuals. Through her illustrations, she hopes to make healthy choices feel intuitive — and inspiring.
